Coordinates from January - June 2026

As of the start of 2026 I've been documenting my coordinates far more thoroughly. If you're subscribed on my YouTube you'll know I'm getting all of my lolita clothes out of storage and doing an absolutely massive overhaul and rebuild so my wardrobe is more functional for who I am now, and as part of that I'm keeping track of what I wear - even if it's just a waist-up coord to film a YouTube video.

However, for the purposes of this blog I'm only photographing and sharing the coords I actually wear to actually do things in. I know that's a lot of explanation that probably no-one cares about but me but hey! I care!

For those who don't, however, here's my coords for the first half of the year.

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Teddy Chocolatier
Cutsew & Socks: Handmade
Wristcuffs: Angelic Pretty
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

I wore this coordinate to do some YouTube filming. I don't remember why I made it a proper full coord rather than my usual "waist-up" that I do for filming, but I did. However, I did also forget to get a full body shot ^__^

Then my first full "leaving the house" coord of 2026 was for an alt fashion and cosplay craft picnic event (yes, lots of things all at once) held in my town. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was a fun time and I made a local lolita friend! So fingers crossed I can actually start participating in a local community again...the downside of Tasmania being so sparsely populated is that every meet that's been held has been in Hobart. Which a 3.5 hours drive away from me. I may do it one day, but definitely not with any regularity!

I'd actually had a version of this coordinate laid out for a while as my next "proper" coord. I ended up fiddling with the accessories a bit with some feedback from Maisie and really liked it in the end! This was also the first time Maisie has seen me in lolita IRL and she liked it ^__^

JSK: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright Tartan Check
Cutsew: Sleepyland Shop
Shoes: Bodyline
Wristcuffs: Angelic Pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/handmade

This coord turned out basically exactly how I pictured it, which is nice! I'm not sure if it's the most flattering colour combo on me, but it was bright and fun and cute, which is what I was going for.

Next I wore a simple coord to go grocery shopping. Not pictured was the inclusion of my little white offbrand heart shaped handbag. I love cute bags in lolita!

Skirt, Headbow & Cutsew: Handmade
OTKS: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Shoes: Bodyline
Necklace: Offbrand

Not much to say about this coordinate, except it was nice to wear my handmade cherry skirt again!

And that's me in lolita for the first half of 2026! It's been great to get back into wearing frill more often again and I hope to continue it into the latter half of the year...though the latter half of the year also involves such things as moving house and changing jobs so we'll see how it goes ^__^

Coordinates from July - December 2025

It took so long for the weather to warm up enough for me to even contemplate wearing lolita outside of filming for YouTube that for a while I thought I may not get any coords in at all in the latter half of 2025. But I did!

On November 1st, I had to run some errands and to my surprise I felt like wearing lolita. So I pulled together a quick casual coord and very much enjoyed wearing it ^__^

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Teddy Chocolatier
Cutsew: Handmade
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

Since it was the day after Halloween I was half expecting to get some kind of "Halloween is over" comment, but the only reaction I got was a nice lady in Kmart saying my dress was cute, so that was nice.

In mid-December I had finished work for the year, the weather was nice, and I was hit by a sudden urge to wear lolita to my last counselling session of 2025. So I did!

JSK: Baby the Stars Shine Bright Shirring Princess
Blouse: Metamorphose temps de fille
OTKS: BTSSB
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand/handmade/Taobao

I took a car selfie and weird hand picture because I wanted to show off my handmade necklace and bracelet. I got into beading/jewellery making in 2025 and have had a lot of fun with it so far! Definitely planning more lolita pieces in future ^__^

And that's me in lolita coords in the latter half of the year. TBH by the time the weather got warm enough to consider wearing lolita I was away from home for two thirds of the time, so didn't have that many chances to wear lolita. However, in that time my girlfriend and I hit our six month anniversary and I got to be back in NSW twice and see a bunch of family and friends (and bring back more lolita stuff for my no-longer-a-capsule wardrobe) so I'm absolutely not complaining ^__^

Coordinates from January - June 2025

Sooooo the first few months of this year kinda sucked, not gonna lie. Life was just a ridiculous comedy of errors like you wouldn't believe. And after that things were better but incredibly busy. So my lolita tally for the last six months was one entire coord.

Oh well. I'm just glad I managed one!

I wore lolita to have a table with my husband James at the Burnie Geek market hosted by TasPop. We're starting to sell our handmade and curated things under the name Unidentified Items - there may be some lolita stuff in future so, y'know, maybe you'd like to follow our Instagram ^__^

JSK & Socks: Metamorphose temps de fille
Cutsew: handmade
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

And a little glimpse of our table!

It was nice to have an excuse to wear lolita again ^__^

Coordinates from October - December 2024

October was hectic - mostly moving, but also getting a new secondhand car and the day job getting extra full on. Fortunately, things were significantly more settled towards the end of the month, which meant that when James and I decided to go to a local Geek Market, I threw together a quick costume coord with my little antlers and some deer makeup.

JSK & OTKS: Metamorphose temps de fille
Blouse: Glittertale
Shoes: Bodyline
Wristcuffs: Angelic Pretty
Antlers: Bedevilled Horns
Flowers: Taobao

You can't really see it, but I'm wearing a cute green and white bead bracelet I bought at the market from Haromega. I tried to take a close up but failed so...yeah...

But, in most exciting lolita news, James spotted someone selling these boots. In my size. For $5.

I will admit, they're not something I'd have normally bought if I was hunting for shoes online, they're a bit too...modern?... for my lolita tastes but for that price, great condition, right there, there was no way I'd pass them up! Especially given how tiny my current wardrobe is, adding a pair of shoes makes a big impact.

Then, as is usual for me, especially in recent times, it was a while before I wore lolita again. But I did bust out the frills when I needed a motivation boost to WFH in early December. I felt cute and put together, and the coord did it's job of making me feel like a proper human being for the day so yay!

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille
Blouse: Glittertale
Headbow: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Everything else: Offbrand

I really liked this coord. The simplicity really felt like going back to a very "me" style of coordinating and actually got me excited for wearing lolita more. Fingers crossed I get some sewing time in soon, because I'd love to have a few more pieces in my wardrobe.

Also, since I dyed my hair back to natural and it came out a bit darker...with the red headbow I'm feeling a bit Snow White ^__^

So nothing too noteworthy over the end of the year, but I'm finally settled and have big (little) plans for my lolita capsule so we'll see what the new year brings!

Coordinates from July - September 2024

Oh boy, another three months gone and barely a coord worn for good reason. Did I mention that winter in Tasmania is cold. because it's been super cold! I also attended ICoN Photofest in September, so my focus was really on cosplay rather than lolita for a good while. And then we had to move. So, you know...

The only coord(s) I wore were for the LolitaInside collab post and video. But they were bute, so enjoy!

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Rose Stripe Shirring
Blouse: Glittertale
Socks: Angelic Pretty
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

This coord is what I initially wore for my LolitaInside unboxing video, and I really liked it. I missed wearing berets!

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Rose Stripe Shirring
Blouse: Glittertale
Cape: Alice Girl
Socks: Innocent World
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

I also enjoyed my "show off the cape" version of the coord. And remember if you do buy anything from LolitaInside to use my 5% off code CAROLINE ^__^

And that's it. Hopefully once we're moved things will quiet down as we get towards the end of the year.

Lolita Inside & Alice Girl Review

Recently, the team at Lolita Inside reached out to me to collaborate. They were kind enough to send me an item of my choice in exchange for this post and oh boy, am I grateful and happy that they did, because I have a gorgeous new addition to my wardrobe!

Stock photo.

This is the Pirate Series Navigation Treasure Hunting Guide Embroidery Handsome Lolita Cloak in brown. I ordered the 3XL and it is perfect for me. The brand is Alice Girl.

First of all, I love it. It is well made, very pretty, and fits me very well - possibly even a bit big! The hardware used, from the buttons to the zipper, is good quality and matches well in style. The fabric is a light suede and the embroidery is well done. I only noticed one tiny flaw in the whole thing - the ends of the trim in one place are fraying a little.

James was lovely enough to do a little photoshoot for me ^__^

Style-wise, it's definitely not a conventional lolita piece, but I think it still works. It's also great for steampunk, pirate and fantasy outfits, which I am definitely going to be using it for!

One of my favourite features is the the hood has a zipper down the centre, which can be undone, turning the hood into a capelet layer. And, of course, you can wear it with the buttons done up or not, with the arm hole thingies open or closed, and you can even button the armhole thingies back onto the side seams for a more open front. Yes, I know I'm not describing that well but it's the best I can do!

Anyway, at the risk of sounding repetitive I am very happy with this cloak and I think I'll get a lot of use out of it.

I am also happy with Lolita Inside. Obviously, this was not a regular purchase but the team I dealt with via email were polite and friendly. The package, pictured above, arrived to me in Australia in 8 days. I liked the patterned postage satchel - it was a fun touch - and inside the cloak was in an Alice Girl bag.

Now, keep in mind that since Lolita Inside is not the manufacturer of the items they sell, product quality may be variable. I can certainly recommend this cloak, and assume other items from Alice Girl would be of similar quality, but that's just something to be mindful of.

Click here to check out the Lolita Inside store, and if you make a purchase use code CAROLINE for a 5% discount (and I will early a small commission).

Coordinates from January - June 2024

I know, I know...I'm posting less now that ever. But I have valid reasons, just keep reading ^__^

This summer was a very humid one, so I was honestly not planning on wearing lolita for ages. But one day dawn quite cool, and it was a WFH day, so I wore lolita for work and then a little bit of YouTube filming in my lunch break.

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Teddy Chocolatier
Cutsew: Handmade
Headbow: Angelic Pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

Of course, it got really hot just after lunch so off the coord came, but I did enjoy wearing it...even if it is an accidental almost exact repeat of a coord from last year ^__^

And then...James and I moved to another state! We literally put everything into storage, except for what we could fit into our little hatchback car and drove. So for the time being I only have a "capsule" wardrobe with me (i.e. a coord with a few changeable pieces for a few different looks), and of course, that was so we could do some shoots!

One week and one day into our new life we did a lovely afternoon photoshoot at my dad's place, and here's an unedited shot my coord.

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Rose Stripe Shirring
Bolero: Maxicimam
Capelet & Beret: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
OTKS: Innocent World
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand

However...it is cold here! And thus I have not had the desire to wear lolita since that shoot. I certainly will be busting out this coord/its variants in future for YouTube filming, if nothing else, but it's almost winter and honestly I'm living in tracksuits with the heater on already.

So we end this coord roundup on that simple note, and who knows where I'll be going from here ^__^

Coordinates from September - December 2023

Once again, this four-month period is a lie. I didn't wear lolita at all in September (I blame catching Covid) and only once at the end of October - on Halloween, to be exact!

Despite the date, this coord was not worn for Halloween. James was doing the last of the spooky shoots for this year on the day itself, so since I had to be respectable I decided I wanted to dress up because it had been so long. I also ran some errands after work and enjoyed being cute for all of it.

I decided to wear Camellia Cat since it had been a while and just built up something simple from there. I think this is actually the first time I've worn as rectangle headdress outside of a photoshoot, and I really like it with my current hairstyle...though as you can see I did add extra bows and flowers.

That weekend I finally got off my butt and filmed some YouTube content and thus wore a coord again ^__^

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Rose Stripe Shirring
Bolero: Maxicimam
OTKS: Innocent World
Shoes: Bodyline
Headbow: Metamorphose temps de fille
Everything else: Offbrand

I loved this coord, it was very me - simple, cute and straddling the line between sweet and classic.

And it gets better! I specifically wanted to wear this JSK as it was the only main piece I had with me that I could try on my new Sleepyland cutsew with (I was filming an unboxing of it), so please enjoy coord version two.

I will admit, yellow is not my best colour, but I love this cutsew, it gives my wardrobe some great new options, and I don't think it looks bad on me, just not as good a some other colours lol.

I also took a selfie that I actually like ^__^

And (I'm sure you're not surprised) that was it for me in terms of lolita for the end of 2023. As a whole I feel very neutral about the year from a lolita perspective, but I do like the coords I wore ^__^

Coordinates from July - August 2023

A bit of warmer weather at the start of July made me decide to wear lolita for a day when James had a model friend of ours over for a making day, I wanted to do grocery shopping, and was going to drive said friend home. If I had to change out of my comfy WFH PJs I figured I may as well be cute.

Skirt: Wonderpunk Jurassic Party
Blouse: Glittertale
Socks: Angelic Pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

And oh my goodness I don't know why but this coord made me feel super duper adorable! I was grinning as I got dressed, felt sassy at the supermarket, and it just made me super happy ^__^

As well a taking my full coord photo James snapped some portraits for me, so here's one of those as well.

And and and the cutest thing happened that day. While we were eating lunch outside a young magpie came close...and ate out of James's hand! In the end, we each got to feed it until it decided it was full and went away. Funnily enough, when I told my mum about it later she said it had been upstairs on the verandah where she had fed it once, but no more. On her refusal it had flown downstairs so apparently, like a cat, magpies have never been fed before if they want food!

Then at the end of the month I wore lolita for a failed attempt at filming a YouTube video. First I had technical difficulties, then I ran out of time, so in the end got nothing usable and will have to re-shoot. But at least I looked cute ^__^

The best thing about this coord is that I didn't choose it! It was picked for me by fellow YouTuber Majestick Dream, and I loved it. It's very much my style but I don't think I would have ended up picking this exact coord on my own - it's very me but just enough different that it was really enjoyable and felt exciting to wear.

If you, dear reader, feel like dressing me up you can see my current capsule wardrobe here ^__^ Just drop a comment or message me on Facebook or Instagram, I'd love to hear from you.

Aaaaand that's it for these two months. There were a few times when I planned to dress up, but it didn't happen for one reason or another. Oh well, tis what tis.

See you next roundup!

Coordinates from May - June 2023

It sure is nice getting back into the swing of wearing lolita, I really missed it ^__^

First coordinate was worn in May to run some errands. It was simple, comfy coord that was really cute and there's not much more to say about it!

JSK: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright Tartan Check
Bag: BTSSB
Socks: Angelic Pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

Though actually I think it's a good moment to mention that I am, thus far, really happy with my "capsule" wardrobe. I doubt I would have come up with this coord if I wasn't working within that limited frame and I honestly really like it!

Next, at the end of June it was photoshoot time again! We were cursed with strong winds and bad light, so I didn't get a full length shot of the coord so please enjoy this flatlay and the proper photos will be up on Facebook sometime ^__^

OP: Maxicimam
Capelet & Beret: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
OTKS: Innocent World
Shoes: Bodyline
Flowers: Offbrand
Antlers: Bedevilled

The shoot was done in part to showcase my awesome Bedevilled antlers, which I utterly adore!

And that was it for the first half of 2023! Honestly, it hasn't been the best year for me thus far and my mental health hasn't been the greatest. But I am taking steps to turn it around so as my headspace improves and as the weather starts to warm up hopefully I'll feel more enthused about wearing lolita.

Coordinates from January - April 2023

Would you look at that...nary a coord from December until April...

But oh well. I did wear lolita few times for YouTube videos, but I don't really count those as "worn outfits" so they never get included in these posts. And, of course, moving house is a big deal so I really don't care that I didn't wear lolita for months. However, once we got into April I started to feel the urge again so here we are ^__^

The urge, to be quite frank, was kickstarted when James did an Easter lolita photoshoot. Our models wore adorable, slightly OTT coords with Dramatic Rose and even though I was just assisting, I had to join in the lolita fun, so I put together a comfortable, practical coord.

Skirt: Wonderpunk Jurassic Party
Cutsew: Handmade
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

It honestly felt so good to wear lolita again, it made me super happy. And I was also chuffed to wear the cutsew I made and to have it look so good! If you're interested, I have a making-of video on my YouTube ^__^

I next wore lolita a week later when I hosted a writing day, which was a very good day - shots, cheese, and about 2k words written.

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Teddy Chocolatier
Cutsew: Handmade
Headbow: Angelic Pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

My next coord was completely unplanned, because it was chosen for me by Paulina of Cupcake Kamisama for the Lolita Fashion Youtubers "Dress Me Up" collab! When I mentioned when I was planning to shoot the video, my lovely husband James suggested doing a proper photoshoot and we did, and it was so fun to do modelling again ^__^

This photo here is unedited to just show off the outfit, but stay tuned for the YouTube video and also the final edited photos on my Facebook.

Skirt: Wonderpunk Jurassic Party
Blouse: Glitter Tale
Haori: Vintage
Socks: Angelic Pretty
Shoes: Bodyline
Bag: Axes Femme
Lace Headdress: Dangerous Nude
 Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

I honestly kind of love this outfit - it just works! But I don't see myself wearing Jurassic Party like this again, I think this styling was a bit too far out of my comfort zone...and that's why I'm super grateful to Paulina for picking it. It's good to get stretched every once in a while!

Overall, it was good to get back into lolita after such a long break. I'm starting to feel settled and functional, and I have a good feeling about the rest of the year, so we'll see what coords that results in ^__^

Coordinates from July - December 2022

Oh, this title is such a lie!

I did not wear lolita (properly, that is - getting into half a coord for a YouTube video or wearing a lolita dress casually don't count) until December. At the moment, due to office issues, I am WFH again, and my manager made it clear that she will just call us on Microsoft Teams whenever she wants so that means I can no longer work in my PJs like a slob. And I hate business casual attire, so I decided it was high time to start wearing lolita to WFH agaim ^__^

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Rose Stripe Shirring
Wristcuffs: Angelic Pretty
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand

For this first WFH coord I wanted simple and comfortable, so this JSK was an obvious choice. I also wanted to see if this peasant-style top James bought for me would work with lolita, and for this kind of coord I think definitely yes!

The next day I actually found myself feeling a bit overwhelmed about what to wear next, so I turned to my tracking spreadsheet and the main piece I'd gone longest without wearing was Verrry Berry Picnic, so that's what I wore ^__^

OP & Necklace: Lady Sloth Verry Berry Picnic
Socks: Angelic Pretty
Headbow: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand/handmade/Taobao

Honestly though, while I did like this outfit, it pushed me to a decision - I need to sell this dress. The neckline is far too wide, meaning my bra straps always show and/or the sleeves fall off my shoulder. A bustier person wouldn't have this issue, but...well...I do! It's bad enough that I feel self conscious and uncomfortable wearing the dress, and I don't want things in my collection that don't bring me joy.

Also - on this day our rental tenancy got terminated.and that just 100% killed my desire to dress up or do anything.

Soooo...that's it for 2022. Due to having to move, and also moving into a much smaller space, I will probably be fairly quiet on the lolita front for a while but hey, that's been me for the past years or so anyway. I do have some posts planned so you may not even notice any difference lol. I've also been getting more out of YouTube than blogging recently, so I'm more active over there ^__^

All in all I'm not quite sure how to conclude this post - I'm a bit too scattered to make much sense. But 2022 is over, and I'll see you all throughout 2023.

What is casual lolita?

Casual lolita is a term that can spark debate online, because it is hard to draw the line between casual and just simple. For a fashion with such structured rules, there isn’t really an agreed upon definition of what a casual lolita outfit really is. Some things are obvious; a casual outfit can span any substyle, and by very definition it is a simpler kind of lolita. But other than that casual lolita is no longer a clear cut case of “it’s a skit and cutsew”.

Let’s look at the fashion as existing on a sliding scale from casual to over the top (OTT), where smack bang in the middle is a “traditional” lolita outfit. Traditional in this sense is something that fits the rules: a structured dress or skirt supported by a petticoat, with a blouse or bolero/cardigan covering the shoulders and upper arms at least, legwear, headwear, shoes, bag and generally one or two matching accessories or jewellery items. On one side of the scale, OTT is exactly what it says it is – exaggerated and excessive. There is more, and more uncommon, details and items going on in this kind of look – generally it is pretty easy to tell when a lolita coordinate is OTT!

However, the reasons for this post is that casual is a lot harder to necessarily spot and to wear. A dictionary definition of casual in the fashion sense is “clothes or shoes suitable for everyday wear rather than formal occasions” and sure, that is what casual is but it doesn’t really help pinpoint what, in lolita terms, makes something casual and not just a simple or basic coordinate. I don’t believe that a simple coord is the same as a casual one – to me, causal lolita is a distinct an aesthetic as OTT in its way.

So to help with defining, as much for my own benefit as for anyone who may read this, what aspects of an outfit contribute to make a coordinate casual lolita rather than just simply lolita I’ve broken an outfit down into individual components below. However, to once again refer to things as a bit of a sliding scale, not every aspect of an outfits needs to be casual in the sense I outline below but if enough of them are, the outfit overall could be counted as casual lolita. And it goes without saying that this is just my opinion based on my own observation and feelings regarding what makes casual lolita casual and not just simple. I’d be interested to know if you agree or not, so feel free to start a discussion in the comments!

Cut and print of main piece
The biggest piece of a lolita outfit is the dress or skirt so let’s go over this first. Generally, detailed and elegant prints don’t tend to read as casual (the exception being some sweet prints because the subject of the prints is so cutesy), nor do cuts which feature details such a lots of ruffles, bustles, overlays, princess sleeves and the like. Solid colours, simple prints and patterns, and straightforward cuts generally lend a more casual air to an outfit.

As a note, sometimes brands (mostly looking at you, Angelic Pretty!) do release miniskirts and salopettes as well. To my mind, even though they don’t conform to the typical lolita silhouette, if the rest of the outfit is distinctly lolita these can count for casual outfits. Otherwise, they just make super adorable casual (but not casual lolita) pieces.

Style and cut of top
What makes a top more casual? If it’s a blouse, a simple cut without a lot of lace, ruffles or other details like fancy sleeves is on the more casual side. If it’s a cutsew, it’s generally more casual immediately by virtue of being made of a knit material but still, there are fancy cutsews with delicate decoration and interesting details, and there are cutsews that are basically lolita t-shirts. Boleros, like cutsews, can range from OTT to casual and the things that make one more causal is limited lace and other decorations as well as the use of more relaxed fabrics like textured knits. Cardigans by default are quite casual, and things like jackets and coats have range much like boleros.

Overall, some cuts read as more casual than others – looser blouses, longer cardigans, plain sleeves, peter pan or low-cut collars, and sailor tops being some examples I can think of offhand. As I mentioned, there are even cutsews that are basically cute lolita t-shirts which are quite the epitome of a casual lolita top!

Volume of petticoat
This is a simple thing because as a general rule less petticoat = more casual. However, some petticoat is still needed in a vast majority of cases to keep an outfit in lolita territory, though the occasional outfit can pull off a completely deflated skirt and still capture the overall lolita aesthetic.

Style and amount of accessories
Like with a petticoat, the simple rule of thumb is less accessories (headwear and jewellery) = more casual. However, style also plays a role – accessories that are smaller or less detailed tend to fit better into a casual lolita aesthetic. I don’t think you can make a veil casual, but a beret or  flower clip or pair of little hair bows are certainly in casual territory. Likewise, no jewellery or simple jewellery is in keeping with the dictionary definition of casual being more for everyday looks. With lolita, you can’t really skip the headwear without looking a bit unfinished, but everything else as far as accessories go in a casual coordinate is fairly optional.

However, in an odd way, things like decora (is this style dead now? It feels pretty dead…) and by extension decora lolita come across as casual to me, despite being quite excessive. There’s just something so fun and free about the accessory overload of decora that is not put together in the same way a lolita outfit typically is. I think this may even be symptomatic of the fact that, to me at least, sweet lolita lends itself better to casual looks than classic or gothic. The overall cute vibe of sweet lends itself better to being toned down to the extent that an outfit is casual, not just simple.

Simplicity of shoes and legwear
Another outfit item you can’t really skip in lolita is legwear but fortunately legwear is a thing that isn’t ever too distinctly one style or another. Of course, solid coloured socks (or tights) and ankle socks are two distinctly casual options, but there is no reason that many printed or patterned tights or socks can’t be part of a casual outfit. Yes, there are some things that are a bit too elegant or fancy or detailed to really look casual but most regular patterned OTKS can be worn in casual, regular or OTT lolita coordinates without much trouble. Shoes are a bit more firmly stuck as to what level of dressed up they are, but generally for casual lolita flat shoes and chunky heeled shoes are suitable, while anything with a distinct heel is less so.

Hairstyle and makeup
In keep with the idea of casual being the “everyday” version, hairstyling and makeup are generally minimal for casual lolita. Makeup in particular and what counts as “everyday” varies depending on the person (for me it’s none at all!) but regarding hairstyles it generally means no to wigs and minimal styling of the natural hair. Some simple hairstyles are buns, braids and just wearing your hair loose.

More relaxed coordination
Now, this point is a little more conceptual than being an observation about clothing items, but to me a casual outfit also does not need to be quite so well matched as a typical lolita outfit is. For example, you can add a pop of unexpected colour or contrasting patterns in a casual look that makes it seem more everyday and less put together. Now, I’m not saying a casual outfit shouldn’t still be cohesive, but I feel like you have more leeway to focus less on proper coordination and can get away with things that are a bit unusual without having to visually justify them.

Incorporating atypical items
This point is basically a follow on from the previous comments about coordination, but casual lolita outfits are the perfect time to pull in non-lolita clothing items. To me, the most common choices here are shoes, jackets and shirts; bringing in sneakers or weird shoes, wearing a leather jacket or quirky coat, and though I haven’t seen it much how about a regular t-shirt? As long as most items fall fairly within lolita territory I feel casual coordinates can work in more unusual pieces with sacrificing the lolita look.

Potential rule breaking
And yet again a follow on in the same vein – casual lolita sometimes breaks the rules. Not too much, or it stops being lolita, but some examples here are not wearing a top with a JSK or skipping legwear or not wearing a petticoat at all. I feel like rule breaking is hard to do right in a lot of cases, because lolita does have a very distinct structure, but it can be done and done well in casual outfits.

So that’s my thoughts on the elements that draw the line between casual lolita and regular lolita, and it’s really not all that simple. There are a number of factors that go into making such a structured fashion look casual but still distinct and in a sense it all boils down to the vibe of an outfit…does it feel lolita as well as casual? Sister fashions to lolita such as otome kei also complicate the issue of casual lolita; generally the difference here is in overall aesthetic because lolita (even gothic) still tends to have a level of cuteness and softness to it, whereas I find otome has more grown-up quirkiness to it. I suppose lolita has an origin more from the seventies natural vibe, whereas otome to me draws more from sixties mod styling.

If you’ve read all the way through this giant post – what are your thoughts? Do you agree with my definitions of how different aspects can contribute to a casual lolita coordinate, or do you have a different perspective? Let me know!

Coordinates from March - June 2022

So, uh, yeah...2022 is apparently a quiet year on the lolita front. But it's been a great year for me on so many others, so I'm trying to make peace with the fact that right now, lolita is a lower priority hobby for me. I'm not leaving lolita or anything like that, but at the moment, my hobby spoons are going towards other things.

Also, April in particular was just ~fucked~ so that didn't help lol.

So my first coord in this posts comes from early May. I dressed up as I needed to run errands in my lunchbreak (this was my last week of full time working from home) and I wanted for film a YouTube video after work. It's a pretty simple coord, but I liked it and it felt very "me".

JSK: Metamorphose temps de fille Rose Stripe Shirring
Bolero: Maxicimam
OTKS: Innocent World
Shoes: Bodyline
Hairclips: Offbrand

Also, I was very happy because James was super complimentary about this coord. Always nice to get husband compliments! He also said I should buy this bolero in other colours...

My next coord came the following week, worn just to WFH. I did end up running errands at lunch as well, but it was nice to dress up with the intention to just stay home. I also busted out some fawn fur, so all in all this coord felt very nostalgic.

Skirt: Metamorphose temps de fille Flower Bottle
Blouse: Glitter Tale
Haori: Vintage
OTKS: Metamorphose temps de fille
Shoes: Bodyline
Beret: Peacockalorum
Flower clip: Sweet Dreamer
Wristcuffs: Angelic Pretty

Next I wore - you guessed it - another coord to WFH in. This was the week where I transitioned from full-time WFH to a hybrid, and I was shocked by now much better I felt getting back into the office routine. So that inspired me to try harder when WFH, hence the coord. But it was a cold day, so I did get changed into something more comfy and cozy - though still not PJs! - before lunch ^__^

Skirt & Headbow: Handmade
OTKS: Metamorphose temps de fille
Shoes: Bodyline
Everything else: Offbrand

Aaaaaand that's it for this time period lol. Both my personal life and day job got absolutely insane from mid-May onwards...and look to continue that way until at least the end of July. But oh well, tis what tis and I hope you liked seeing these three coords ^__^

Coordinates from January - February 2022

I have one word for you - summer. Or perhaps two - ugh, summer.

I wanted to wear lolita over my Christmas break and when I started back at work (thanks to Omicron, still working from home) but the heat and humidity killed me. Fortunately, I got enough of a break in the weather to wear a coord at the end of my first work week back...a coord I'd had sitting out since the Monday, waiting to be worn but languishing due to the awful weather.

Skirt: Bodyline
Wristcuffs & Headbow: Angelic Pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

I like that I started to year off with some sweet. This coord felt very cute, very me, and it made me happy to wear it.

And then it won't surprise anyone to hear that I didn't wear lolita for almost an entire month. In my defence, we had a lot of very hot and humid weather, and I was also quite sick (not the Rona, thank goodness) for about three weeks. So, you know.

So my next coord was for rather late in February, worn to work from home but primarily because we had tradies coming over to fix a broken step. People = wearing not-pyjamas so why not lolita?

JSK; Metamorphose temps de fille Teddy Chocolatier
Blouse: Glitter Tale
Headbow: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Necklace; Angelic pretty
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

However, it had a bonus side effect of actually making me really happy. Between the weather and the sick I'd been pretty down and feeling un-creative, and this coord really helped put me back into a better mindset.

PS How do you like my new hair? It probably won't be around for long because technically I can't have coloured hair for work, but while we're still WFH I figured why not just do it! I'll either cut it off or dye over it when I get back to the office.

Given how good that coord made me feel, I decided to continue it and wore lolita the next Monday. Nothing particularly exciting about this coord as it was honestly chosen for comfort and ease of wear, but nevertheless I enjoyed it. Shirring Princess is the best ^__^

JSK & Socks: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Wristcuffs: Handmade
Everything else: Offbrand/Taobao

The next day I defaulted to working in PJs, but on Wednesday I dressed up again. It really has been helping my mental state!

Blouse: Glitter Tale
Socks & Headbow: Innocent World
Shoes: Bodyline
Wristcuffs: Baby, the Stars Shine Bright

This coord was entirely brought about because I wanted to wear classic, dammit. And it dawned on me, as I tried to put something together, that I don't actually have any properly classic main pieces that fit at the moment. Ever since I got rid of my handmade green skirt there's really only my Victorian Maiden skirt that's truly classic...and I don't really do classic in black! So this coord isn't as classic as it could be, but I still enjoyed it. And now I potentially have sewing plans...

And that was it for the first two months of 2022. As the weather gets more tolerable I do hope to wear lolita more frequently and I am getting a lot of joy out of it right now ^__^
