A sailor lolita capsule wardrobe

It's time for another capsule wardrobe post and this one was an interesting experience!

A little backstory to start. A while ago I posted a poll on my YouTube channel about what theme I should go for in my next capsule, and I wanted to do a capsule video because I was coming up to some very turbulent months (divorce, moving house, changing jobs) and wanted something comparatively "easy" (easy is in quotes because it's not easy to do these, but it's not my face in front of a camera so they're more flexible to produce) to do. Sailor lolita was winning when I started, though at time of writing this it's a tie with wa lolita, so sailor lolita it was.

Turns out I just went on hiatus on YouTube but such is life ^__^

I'm actually posting this written version before the video version, which I don't normally do, but I have other videos I want to push out first and didn't feel like holding this back arbitrarily.

So behold, a sailor lolita capsule wardrobe!

I decided to run with the classic navy/red/white tricolour palette for this wardrobe. Choosing different colours would have probably made for a more unique result, but I wanted to see if I could do a good job of making the stereotype actually versatile in a capsule format.

In the end, I think I did okay on that front. Obviously, literally everything is sailor themed - you cannot make a non-sailor coord from this wardrobe. I went all-in on the theme.

As an aside, I also did what I think was clever - other than the OP, the main pieces do not have sailor collars but all the tops do. Which means every coord has a sailor collar but there's no faffing about with what necklines go with what other necklines.

Anyhoo, as usual, have some example coords from the wardrobe...six per main piece this time!

So I love this skirt as itself, but it was surprisingly hard to coordinate. I think it's because the combo of the cut and the pattern makes it quite busy. which means that some coords (ahem number five) are a bit much for my tastes. Normally I'd have just skipped using that cutsew with the skirt but since I was making more coords than I had tops, I made sure to use everything at least once for every main piece to make sure I was really showing variety, not just my personal tastes.

Though speaking of person tastes - I love this JSK. In fact, i love this whole series from BTSSB - it's called Best Wishes and as well as this JSK the long sleeved blouse, red headbow and boater hat are all from this series. It wasn't a deliberate choice either, but once I realised I kept it in because realistically... why not have things in a capsule that are literally designed to go together? As long as they're versatile enough otherwise I think it's actually a good thing, and these certainly did all coordinate well with the rest of the wardrobe.

The sole OP of the wardrobe is also my exception to using each top at least once because I couldn't for the life of me get the re cardigan to look good in the collages, so I decided to skip it. It does irk me, especially because I think it also wouldn't work IRL but I guess we're allowed to have one thing that doesn't go with everything lol.

As an aside - I think this OP and it's coords are my favourite in the wardrobe. I'd never wear it (white is dangerous) but I think it's so striking and fun.

This JSK was something I added kind of late - I realised I wanted something that was more leaning on the red side of things than navy and white. With how intensive the tricolour theming is  I couldn't coord it without having at least a tiny bit of blue (Usakumya's collar) in the coords, but I do enjoy that change of pace this brings to the wardrobe in coords three and five - coord five in particular is one of my overall favourites.

Last but not least, this suspender skirt was just a solid choice. The suspenders and the peplum make it interesting, but it's still (as far as this wardrobe goes) pretty neutral so it works really well with everything.

Not gonna lie, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this wardrobe and by how much variety I was able to get out of it. Sure, every single coordinate is heavily sailor-esque, but isn't that the point of a sailor capsule?

Seriously, when I started I thought I'd be bored by the end but it was the opposite - I had so much fun putting the coords together. And I think it's interesting how freeing it was working with such a distinct limit. I don't think I've ever tried strictly tricolour wardrobes before, and I might just have to give it a go again in the future. Also tempted to put together a sailor capsule that is in a different colour scheme...

Anyway, I hope this was an interesting read and as always, I'm open to suggestions for future capsules ^__^

  1. There is always love in my heart for tricolour stuff. The fun part with it is that even without the sailor collar, the colour scheme itself can read very sailor. Excellent choice on adding that Sailor Kumya too, everything looks like a deliberate plush twinning with it <3

  2. It is a good colour scheme - though confession time, I think I finally no longer have it in my brain as your primary colours cheme, I think that's green in my brain now ^__^ I adore the Sailor Kumya, I couldn't NOT include it.
